huge wildfires in Oklahoma, fueled through the most dangerous conditions in a decade, have killed people, destroyed dozens of houses, and charred an area larger than new york city.

the biggest of the blazes, the Rhea fire, had burned 283,0.5 acres in western Oklahoma and was only 3% contained as of Wednesday. several other wildfires inside the state have collectively burned tens of thousands of extra acres, and in overall flames have raced across more than 500 rectangular miles — an area that is greater expansive than most principal US cities together with new york and los angeles.
at least two people have died and as a minimum 20 others have been injured within the fires.

In Dewey County, which has suffered plenty of the Rhea fire's fury, 50 homes spread across as a minimum five separate groups had been destroyed. hundreds of different buildings, together with barns, have also been lost.

while several different fires maintain to rage throughout the region, authorities say they don't yet know how horrific the damage is.

in the last week, the national weather service has issued two "extraordinarily crucial" hearth outlooks, the most severe stage issued via the agency, over extremely dry and windy conditions with relative humidities as low as the single digits, according to NWS meteorologist John Pike.
